The Importance of Worming Treatments

Worming treatments are equally important, protecting your pet from harmful parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. These parasites can affect your pet’s health and, in some cases, pose a risk to human family members. Our veterinary team will recommend a worming schedule tailored to your pet’s age, size, and lifestyle to ensure effective protection.

Unsure if your pet may be affected by fleas, ticks or worms? Signs to look out for include:

  • Excessive scratching
  • Red or irritated skin
  • Flea dirt (black specks) for flea infestations
  • Swelling or lethargy
  • Weight loss
  • Bloated belly
  • Vomiting
  • Visible worms in stool

What Do Paralysis Ticks Look Like?

Paralysis ticks are small, oval-shaped parasites that attach to your pet’s skin to feed. They range in colour from light grey to blue-grey when engorged. Before feeding, they appear flat and brownish, about the size of a pinhead, but they swell significantly as they consume blood.

Paralysis ticks are typically found in bushland, long grass, and coastal areas, especially in warm, humid climates. They commonly attach:

  • Under the collar, tail or front legs
  • Inside the groin area
  • Between the toes
  • On the elbow

Ticks can be removed using a tick remover or fine-tipped tweezers by grasping close to the skin and pulling steadily. If your pet is experiencing weakness, wobbliness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, or paralysis, call Kanwal Veterinary Hospital on (02) 4392 2088 for urgent attention.
